Biography:

2ND LIEUT. RONALD EDWIN WHITE, 1ST NORTHUMBRIAN FIELD COY., R.E. (T.F.). DIED ON MARCH 5TH, 1915, FROM WOUNDS RECEIVED IN ACTION ON MARCH 4TH AT YPRES. AGED 24. At the School 1904—9 (Day Boy). R. E. White was the third son of the late Robert White and of Mrs. White of 67, Mount Ephraim, Tunbridge Wells. His eldest brother, P. E. White (J.H. and D.B. 1893—8), was an engineer and died on January 29th, 1919, at Paarl, South Africa, of heart failure after influenza. Entering the School in September, 1904, R. E. White was in the Engineering VI, from January, 1908, and was promoted a House Praepostor in May and a Sergeant in the O.T.C in September, 1908. He was, moreover, in the XV in 1908, and leaving July, 1909, went up to Trinity College, Cambridge, and played three-quarter for the College. Having received a commission dated August 1st, 1914, in the 1st Northumbrian Field Coy., R.E. (T.F.), he went out to France in 1914. He was wounded on March 4th, 1915, at Ypres, whilst leading his men into a fire trench, where they were to attempt to sap up to the German trenches. He died next day, and was buried in the cemetery on the old ramparts to the west of the Port de Lille at Ypres. His commanding officer and brother officers bear unanimous testimony to his ability and value as an officer, to the excellent work he had done in training and at the Front, and to his great popularity with his men.
