Biography:

2ND LIEUT. CECIL ARTHUR SPEYER, 4TH BATTN. LONDON REGT. (ROYAL FUSILIERS). KILLED IN ACTION, AUGUST 16TH, 1917, NEAR GLENCORSE WOOD, IN "THE BATTLES OF YPRES, 1917." AGED 22. At the School 1909—13 (Parkside). 2nd Lieut. C. A. Speyer was the elder son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur A. Speyer, of Birchwood, Shortlands, Kent, and a grandson of the late Mr. Frank Hudson, J.P., of Godden Green, Sevenoaks. Entering the School from Aldro, Eastbourne, in May, 1909, he left at Christmas, 1913, having become a Lance-Corporal in the O.T.C. in May, 1913, and a House Praepostor in his last Term. In Football he just failed to obtain his 1st XV. colours owing to a slight attack of pneumnonia. After leaving School he joined the H.A.C., and in September, 1914, went to the Front with the 1st Battn. On April 23rd, 1915, he was wounded in the shoulder at St. Eloi and slightly gassed, and was sent to the Military Hospital at Colchester. He was gazetted to a commission in the London Regt., dated June 18th, 1915, but was not able to join at once as the bullet which had not been extracted, caused him some trouble. Eventually it was removed, and after being stationed at Salisbury for some time he returned to the Front in September, 1916. He was killed by an enemy shell on August 16th, 1917, near Glencorse Wood. His Colonel wrote:— " He was a fine soldier and a delightful companion. He died leading his men, and by his heroic example encouraged them to the end. His death is not only a great loss to us and the Battalion, but also to the country for which he gave his young life." The Chaplain writes:— " His death is a real loss to us, as he was always cheerful under trying conditions, and very popular with his men. He was a very gallant officer."
