Biography:

PTE. JOHN SIDWELL SHOTTON, 23RD BATTN. (1ST SPORTSMAN'S) ROYAL FUSILIERS (CITY OF LONDON REGT.). KILLED IN ACTION IN DELVILLE WOOD, JULY 27TH, 1916. AGED 37. At the School 1893—7 (Hill Side). J. S. Shotton was the second son of Eobert Shotton. Coming to the School in September, 1893, he left in July, 1897, from Modern A, as the highest Form on the Modern side was then called, having been a House Praepostor and also in the Shooting VII. of 1897. On leaving he was articled to Mr. John White, Surveyor and Estate Agent, Warrington, and whilst there passed his P.A.S.I. Examination. After farming in Herefordshire for several years he had gone into partnership with Mr. T. Ridley, Ventnor. He enlisted in the 1st Sportsman's Battn. of the Royal Fusiliers in October, 1914, and went to the Front in November, 1915, and was for some time in the La Basse district. The Battalion took part in the Battles of the Somme, 1916, and on July 23rd they went to Delville Wood. He was shot through the head in the fighting there on July 27th, 1916. His Company Commander wrote of him:— " He died like a good soldier, doing his duty bravely. Our attack was quite successful, and it is entirely owing to the courage and steadiness of your son and his comrades that we were able to gain and hold on to the position."
