Biography:

RIFLEMAN HAROLD EDWIN PORTER, 3/5TH BATTN. LONDON REGT. (LONDON RIFLE BRIGADE), ATTD. 1/15TH BATTN. LONDON REGT. (CIVIL SERVICE RIFLES). KILLED IN ACTION AT MOISLAINS, NEAR PERONNE, SEPTEMBER 2ND, 1918. AGED 19. At the School 1913—15 (Parkside). Harold Edwin Porter was the third son of Mr. and Mrs. John Edwin Porter, of Avenay, Folkestone. His elder brother, Ernest George Porter (P.S. 1911—13), enlisted in the 19th (2nd Public Schools) Battn. of the Royal Fusiliers in October, 1914, obtained a commission in the Special Reserve of the Buffs in May, 1915, and was promoted Lieutenant (S.R.) July 1st, 1917. After serving in 1915 and 1916 with various T.M. Batteries he was seconded to the Tank Corps in January, 1917, and in December, 1917, became Acting-Captain in the 12th Heavy Battn. of the Tank Corps, with which he served in the Final Offensive. Their younger brother, Charles Edward Porter (P.S. 1914-16) joined the Artists Rifles O.T.C. in June, 1918, as soon as he was old enough to do so, and subsequently became an R.A.F. Cadet. H. E. Porter entered the School in May, 1913 from Feltonfleet, Folkestone, and left at the age of 16 from the Modem Sixth in December, 1915, to enter his father's business, a firm of shipping agents in the city. On his eighteenth birthday, June 8th, 1917, he enlisted in the 3rd Battn. of the London Rifle Brigade. He soon obtained promotion to Lance-Corporal, training at Aldershot till Easter Sunday, March 31st, 1918, when he was sent out with a draft to France to the l/15th Battn. of the London Regiment, the Civil Service Rifles. This entailed the relinquishment of his stripe. He served with the C.S. Rifles for some time in the Albert sector and then, when our offensive started in August, his division, the 47th, advanced to Peronne. He was killed on the morning of September 2nd, 1918, whilst going over the top with his Lewis-Gun team before Moislains, near Peronne.
